Jessika with a “K” – The Story Behind the Photograph

Several years ago, I was struggling to overcome my reluctance in approaching people to ask if I could photograph them. Walking through the Arboretum I happened to meet Jessika and her mom. Jessika, totally innocent and opened explained to me her name was Jessika with a “K”. I offered to take a photo of Jessika and her mom and send them a print. Jessika’s mom was hesitant but Jessika looked at her mom and said “oh please, that way we have a reason to see each other again”. I don’t know their story, but I imagine they had been through some rough times. Only this didn’t matter to Jessika. The love in her eyes was obvious.

I shot a couple of quick photos, went home, printed two images and mailed them off to Jessika’s mom. I didn’t put a return address on the package and can only hope the package was received and Jessika and her mom had another reason to see each other. I am happy I took the “risk” in approaching them.  I’m glad their moment didn’t end up in my “Photo NOT Taken” category.

Lost

This photo has received much commentary concerning it’s emotional impact. Does the pacifier represent a irretrievable moment, abandonment or bygone innocence? It’s a child without a child. becki dickinson photography
