Saturday afternoon in downtown Greensboro was the scene of an anti-war rally. The event was organized by The World Can’t Wait (“World Can’t Wait is organizing people living in the United States to take responsibility to stop the whole disastrous course led by the Bush administration. We seek to create a political situation where the Bush administration’s program is repudiated, where Bush himself is driven from office, and where the whole direction he has been taking U.S. society is reversed” www.worldcantwait.org).
The rally consisted of various speakers, entertainers and booths selling food, revolutionary books. In the plaza crowd I saw a nun, a priest, veterans against the war, Cakalak Thunder drum corp, media, Iranians, Iraqis and all assortment of other individuals.
Two of the most eloquent speakers were a student leader from UNCG and then a member of the Nation of Islam.
Police force was out and about in large numbers. I noticed several on roof tops. And over to one side a member of the force had a tripod mounded camera pointed at the speakers and crowd.
On the outerbounds of the plaze, a hundred of so counter protesters were barricaded behind police tape, shouting through blowhorns. Members from Gathering of Eagles and biker groups Rolling Thunder and Patriot Guard Riders made up the bulk of this counter-protesting group.
